GREATSTONE

Where? You may well ask! It's that little stretch of coast between Littlestone and Dungeness. Mostly a single row of houses, with a few short roads off on the landward side, and a beautiful stretch of land on the seaward side, which is a protected extention to the Dungeness Area of Conservation. Beyond that lies the sea and the Varne Bank.

Originally, permission was given for a large number of houses and required facilities to be built in the 1920s, in the end only a few were actually constructed. No more were added until the 60s and 70s.

On the 16th July 1927, the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (RHDR) opened a station here,  called at Greatstone on Sea Halt. However as the expected population boom of the village never happened. the station was finally scrapped in 1971.

There's not too much history here, but there are the Sound Mirrors - which I will explain as and when I get to photograph them. And the same goes for the Varne Bank - a feature only visible at low tide. There's also the bungalow where PLUTO (the Pipe Line Under The Ocean) enters the sea. More to come later.....................

In the meantime, here's a little taster just to set the page up
