Essex is the closest non-contiguous county to Kent, being the first county in East Anglia, as you cross the River Thames. The two counties are irrevocably joined together, by two road tunnels, a rail tunnel and a huge bridge. And now plans are being drawn up for yet another Thames crossing between the two.
SOUTHEND
SOUTHEND
Southend has always been a popular seaside resort, particularly with Londoners. It's not dissimilar to Margate, across the water in Kent, but its main attraction is the pier. At 1.33 miles, it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. The best way to reach the other end, is to use the train which trundles up and down all day.
Oh and when the tide goes out, it really goes out............
