With the sea receding, Rye Harbour is now almost two miles from the town of Rye, at the mouth of the River Rother, which used to enter the sea at Romney, but changed course to Rye. The mouth of the river is enhanced by the rivers Tillingham and Brede, which join it.Because of this, its' own community has grown up around the estuary.
I'm going to treat it as a separate village, and there is much to explore - probably next summer. It will include, amongst other things, the Listed Mary Stanford lifeboat station out on the shore, replaced when the lifeboat capsized when going out on an emergency call, with a total loss of life of the crew. I will relate the full tale when I have taken the necessary pictures.
There is also a wildlife reserve to explore, and the recently re-opened Camber Castle ruins. Meanwhile, here's one or two shots of the harbour
