One of Wales' National Parks (why they don't just make the whole of Wales one big national park, I don't know), the Brecons are a majestic, often lonely place. The Brecon to Merthyr road is a particular favourite of mine. It 'may' have something to do with a viewpoint called The Verandah, with a burger wagon that does probably the best bacon baps and burgers in the area. You always know where the foods good, if a food stop is full of lorries and or bikers. The park is now known by its' original Welsh name
Brecon Mountain Railway
Another of the Great Little Trains Of Wales, the only one operating in the south, the BMR sits at the foot of the Beacons, not far from Merthyr Tyddfil. The rail runs alongside a reservoir, and there's plenty of opportunity to spot wildlife.
